KODAK TRACELESS System for Anticounterfeiting to Protect High Value Donruss NFL Trading Cards
KODAK TRACELESS System for Anticounterfeiting to Protect High Value Donruss NFL Trading Cards
Rochester, New York, January 17 — As the NFL Playoffs advance to the Conference Championships, Donruss Playoff L.P., is bringing in a new lineman to protect its highly collectible National Football League (NFL) trading cards – Eastman Kodak Company.
Donruss announced today that it will deploy the KODAK TRACELESS System for Anticounterfeiting on selected high value Donruss trading cards. The cards, which premier the week prior to Super Bowl XLII, will include an invisible marker that can only be detected with a KODAK TRACELESS Reader.
“The TRACELESS System provides an easy method to distinguish genuine Donruss products from fakes, ensuring our customers an authentic product whose value will continue to appreciate over time,” said Bill Sawtelle, VP of Quality Assurance, Donruss Playoff L.P. “Our cards are unique because they contain actual game used artifacts, such as priceless pieces of game worn jerseys, helmets or footballs, so the value of the card really depends on its authenticity. The TRACELESS System will help us limit the ability to counterfeit cards.”
Donruss has established a reputation among collectors for its high end trading cards. For over ten years Donruss has used authentic game worn materials across its brands. The materials in these cards create a unique and valuable collectors item. Donruss trading cards are regularly included on the product “hot lists” prepared by the premier trading card industry publications.
“Internet sales and online auctions have sparked a proliferation of fake sport cards, and the situation is becoming a serious problem for manufacturers and collectors of these prized items,” said Steve Powell, General Manager & Director, Security Solutions, Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group. “By introducing an invisible component to the card that the counterfeiters can’t find, our advanced technology gives Donruss trading cards a strong defense and eliminates a counterfeiter’s ability to make cheap replicas.”
KODAK Security Solutions bring together the resources of Kodak’s vast intellectual property portfolio, and expertise in material science, digital imaging, and printing to deliver products and technologies that protect against counterfeiting and diversion. KODAK Security Solutions are backed by the worldwide resources of Kodak’s Service and Support organization. For more information about KODAK Security Solutions visit graphics.Kodak.com.

Kodak Focuses on Delivering Offset Class Quality, Providing Scaleable Solutions with Inkjet Printing Systems
Kodak Focuses on Delivering Offset Class Quality, Providing Scaleable Solutions with Inkjet Printing Systems
Dusseldorf, Germany, January 17 — Kodak’s three prong strategy for its high speed inkjet portfolio is based on meeting customer needs. The foundations of Kodak’s approach are to provide technology options by extending its VERSAMARK Printing System Portfolio, developing scaleable solutions for customers to move to the next level system, and taking inkjet into new applications using KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology.
KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology is a continuous inkjet system that enables offset class quality, productivity, reliability and cost with the full benefits of digital printing for high volume commercial applications. It allows continuous inkjet printing to expand beyond the core base of transactional printers and secondary imprinting and into high volume commercial applications.
Stream Inkjet Technology serves as an entrée for continuous inkjet printing into commercial printers that want the benefits of variable data, short run, personalization or versioning on their jobs traditionally produced using offset presses. To demonstrate Kodak’s commitment to Stream Inkjet Technology and its ability to meet the needs of high volume commercial printing, Kodak will demonstrate the Stream Inkjet Technology Concept Press at drupa 2008.
“Our inkjet strategy is based on our belief that inkjet will have a dramatic effect on the printing industry over the next 10 years,” said Antonio M. Perez, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Eastman Kodak Company. “Kodak has made the commitment to invest in inkjet, based on our unmatched expertise in digital imaging and materials science. This combination today allows Kodak to provide our customers with best-in-class technologies for the consumer market. In May, at drupa, we will again apply our unique knowledge of printing to present a breakthrough advance in high volume production inkjet through our revolutionary Stream Inkjet Technology.”
Complementing Stream Inkjet Technology based solutions, other additions to Kodak’s portfolio allow customers to select the right KODAK Inkjet System for their current needs and provide an easy path to the next level system as their requirements change. These scaleable solutions protect customers’ investments, allowing them to increase throughput or color capabilities via other KODAK Inkjet Systems as their businesses grow.
Kodak announced that it will expand the high volume V Series Product line with the KODAK VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System. The VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System allows printers with volumes of 1 million to 5 million A4 impressions a month to economically print TransPromo and direct mail applications.
Kodak’s expanded lineup of inkjet printing systems extends its solutions in the core markets of addressing, direct mail imprinting, and transactional printers. In addition to serving new segments through its own systems, Kodak collaborates with other manufacturers to deliver solutions—based on Kodak’s VERSAMARK Printing Systems portfolio—for specific publishing and other industrial applications.
“Stream Inkjet Technology and scaleable expansions to our portfolio set us on a course to bring inkjet printing to new markets and customers within the segments we currently serve,” said Isidre Rosello, General Manager, Inkjet Printing Solutions, Kodak. “As we move forward with our long term strategy, we will continue to serve our core transactional market by continually enhancing and expanding our market leading high speed, color, roll fed and imprinting inkjet solutions.”

Kodak Expands V-Series Inkjet Portfolio at drupa 2008 to Serve Mid Volume Data Centers
Kodak Expands V-Series Inkjet Portfolio at drupa 2008 to Serve Mid Volume Data Centers
Dusseldorf, Germany, January 17 — The latest expansion of the KODAK VERSAMARK V-Series Printing Systems portfolio brings higher resolution to Kodak’s inkjet line and provides an affordable solution for the mid volume range of bill and statement producers.
The new KODAK VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System targets data centers with volumes of more than 1 million images per month of transactional, promotional and TransPromo documents, such as billing, account statements and direct mail. It operates at maximum production capacity of 1,090 A4 (letter sized) impressions per minute.
Launching at drupa 2008, the VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System employs drop-on-demand print technology with image resolution of 600 x 600 dpi, and eliminates the redundant process of printing full color shells for transactional statements and bills, reducing cost and production time.
The VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System provides a cost effective solution for data center printers that serve their customers with short runs of high quality documents, as well as long run transaction and promotional materials. Low operational costs make this system particularly economical for applications like multipage financial statements, credit card bills and telecommunications invoices.
“The VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System offers high print quality, low running costs, and mid volume production capability. It is the perfect complement to the VERSAMARK VT3000 Printing System and its high volume, ultra low cost position,” said Ronen Cohen, Vice President, Inkjet Printing Solutions, Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group (GCG). “As a scaleable solution provider, the VL2000 System will serve the current needs of mid volume data centers and Kodak will provide an easy path to the next level V series system as their volume requirements grow.”
With roll to roll operation, the VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System can print images as wide as 18.67 inches, with a web speed of 250 feet per minute. United States and Canada list price for a two-up simplex configuration is expected to be less than $1.60 million. US&C list price for a two-up duplex configuration is expected to be less than $2.95 million.
The system supports the most common transactional and promotional print streams and is backed by Kodak’s color management expertise. The VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System requires a low level of operator involvement due to advancements in the user interface and system design.
“Data center customers can choose the KODAK System that’s right for their operation from the industry’s most economical solutions for a wide variety of print applications that require full variable data capability, such as TransPromo communications,” said Pat McGrew, Data Center and Transaction Segment Evangelist, Inkjet Printing Solutions, GCG. “Kodak’s experience with inkjet technology and color management meets the needs of today’s expanding data center printing operations. Whether their production needs are in the thousands or millions of personalized statements, Kodak serves as a single solution source for mid and high-volume print providers.”
The VERSAMARK VL2000 Printing System will be at Kodak’s stand, D01, in hall 5 at drupa 2008.

Kodak to Unveil Offset Class Inkjet at drupa 2008
Kodak to Unveil Offset Class Inkjet at drupa 2008
Dusseldorf, Germany, January 17 — Kodak will demonstrate the next generation of continuous inkjet printing technology, KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology, at drupa 2008 when it unveils the KODAK Stream Concept Press.
The full color, high speed Stream Concept Press will demonstrate how continuous inkjet technology will reach offset class in terms of quality, productivity and cost in commercial applications. The Stream Concept Press features resolution that exceeds 600 dpi, small ink droplet size, high accuracy of drop placement, and fast production speeds that exceed 500 fpm.
Continuous inkjet technology is moving into new markets, focusing on commercial printers that require very high volume capabilities. Stream Technology will serve as an entrée into continuous inkjet printing for commercial printers that produce monthly page volumes of 10 million or more and want to bring the benefits of digital print—such as variable data, short run, personalization or versioning—to jobs traditionally produced using offset presses.
“Stream Technology and a combination of Kodak’s expertise in color management, workflow, inks and substrates will combine to bring unparalleled digital printing solutions to commercial offset printers,” said Isidre Rosello, General Manager, Inkjet Printing Solutions, Kodak. “With the benefits of offset class quality, reliability, throughput, and cost of operation, Stream Technology will be the platform to enable more printers to take full advantage of digital growth opportunities using inkjet.”
In addition to the Stream Inkjet Writing System, the Stream Concept Press will leverage Kodak’s developments in ink and media offering commercial printers pigment based inks that provide outstanding color saturation and permanence. Printers using full color continuous inkjet technology have in the past been limited to printing on uncoated paper stock with dye water based inks or higher cost inkjet coated substrates. Stream Technology will enable a greater breadth of products to be produced with a greater offering of substrates, both coated and uncoated.
The Stream Concept Press has been demonstrated to limited audiences at Kodak’s facility in Dayton, Ohio.
“Stream Technology will bring some exciting changes to the industry and this technology demonstration will be an impressive display of its offset class capabilities,” said Ronen Cohen, Vice President of Marketing, KODAK Inkjet Printing Solutions. “Stream Technology provides a number of flexible features to meet the needs of commercial printers for applications like direct mail, catalogs, and free standing inserts. Stream Technology is one of the foundations that will solidify Kodak’s leadership in inkjet innovations. The feedback from the demonstrations in Dayton has been fantastic.”
The Stream Concept Press technology demonstration and other KODAK Inkjet Products will be in Kodak’s stand, D01, in Hall 5 at drupa 2008.

KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System Version 5.0 Maximizes Integration of Digital and Conventional Workflows
KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System Version 5.0 Maximizes Integration of Digital and Conventional Workflows
Dusseldorf, Germany, January 17 — A series of new features and functions in the KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System Version 5.0 delivers the performance, quality, and automation required to drive a fully integrated conventional and digital printing facility.
The PRINERGY Workflow System 5.0 allows users to process static and variable data printing (VDP) jobs through the same workflow, manage end to end color on multiple devices, and automate complex routines in print production workflows.
“Kodak understands the challenge of delivering profitable digital print and workflow production systems that produce high volumes of shorter runs—without operators having to touch every single job,” said Patrick Stuart, Technology Marketing Director, The Bureau, a commercial and POP printing company in Minneapolis. “The PRINERGY System 5.0 can pilot a printer’s entire workflow, automating tasks and interfacing with existing systems using industry standard JDF specifications.”
Efficient Digital Workflow
The PRINERGY System 5.0’s new digital print management features provide enhanced connectivity and accessibility to digital devices, bringing the power and flexibility of a production workflow system to digital applications. For the first time, conventional and digital presswork can be driven effectively from one workflow, managing multiple devices to optimize performance and productivity, increasing efficiency and maximizing press utilization.
Managing digital jobs requires extended automation and intelligent job handling. The PRINERGY System 5.0’s new Smart Lists function enables printers to easily and quickly queue jobs according to production critical criteria such as stock type, due date, estimated time to print and customer information.
Using Smart Lists, a printer could, for example, quickly assign all jobs of a particular stock type that are due at a certain time to a device. Digital devices and Smart Lists can be added quickly and easily, providing a flexible, scaleable toolset optimized for digital print jobs that typically come in larger volumes, with smaller run counts. The PRINERGY System 5.0’s digital connectivity provides a powerful window into the device’s status, loaded media, online finishing options and available inks through the open JDF specification. Together with the KODAK INSITE Storefront System, the PRINERGY System 5.0 delivers a highly automated, comprehensive solution to help printers maximize productivity and throughput, reducing operational costs and delivering centralized control over conventional and digital printing devices.
Revolutionary Color Control
Establishing and maintaining accurate and repeatable color cost effectively for a printer is critical to meeting the expectations of the print buyer. With a revolutionary device based approach to delivering color, the PRINERGY System 5.0’s new color handling platform reduces costs by:
Helping to ensure that color control elements such as calibration curves, ICC profiles and spot color recipes are used together correctly
Reducing the number of press runs required for establishing accurate color
Reducing the need for extensive prepress operator’s training
Allowing easier adoption of color standards such as FOGRA, SWoP and GRACoL.
The PRINERGY System 5.0 greatly simplifies the process of controlling color throughout the workflow with device based color handling, which maps color parameters such as ICC profiles, calibration curves and recipes together. If a condition on a device changes, the PRINERGY System 5.0 tracks the changes and automatically applies the new settings to jobs. Color specifications can now be assigned quickly and accurately, reducing errors and the need for extensive color training for operators. The PRINERGY System 5.0’s new color handling platform helps ensure integrating industry standard print specifications and conditions such as FOGRA, SWoP and GRACoL can be achieved rapidly and without errors.
Intelligent Automation
The PRINERGY System 5.0 further enhances automation in production workflows with more powerful JDF driven Rules Based Automation. The PRINERGY System 5.0’s Rules Based Automation function uses conditions and logic to automatically process jobs, saving valuable production time. The PRINERGY System 5.0 uses the JDF information that accompanies each job throughout production to make intelligent decisions about processing, imposing and outputting files.
